Communications Impact

The communications strategy for the Regional Clean Energy Initiative elevated the project’s visibility and impact across Central America. Through:

A revamped graphic identity, tailored to resonate with diverse audiences.
The development of targeted communication channels, ensuring information reached key stakeholders effectively.
Production of animated videos and testimonials, which showcased real-life success stories and the Initiative’s transformative outcomes.
This approach established the Initiative as a benchmark for communication excellence and inspired other regional projects to adopt similar strategies. The compelling storytelling and visual materials strengthened the Initiative’s reputation, underscoring its pivotal role in advancing clean energy solutions and fostering regional integration.

Economic Growth

The Regional Clean Energy Initiative was launched as part of the U.S. Government’s Climate Change and Economic Growth Strategy, with the goal of addressing critical development challenges in Central America. Operating from July 2012 to December 2017, the Initiative targeted the six countries of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, with a particular focus on the Northern Triangle—El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras—regions most affected by social and economic crises.

The Initiative aimed to enhance citizen security and economic prosperity through the expansion of renewable energy and the promotion of energy efficiency. Key objectives included:

Improving the enabling environment for renewable energy development by strengthening national and regional institutions, fostering regulatory harmonization, and developing the Regional Electricity Market (MER).
Reducing energy consumption by promoting rational energy use and increasing efficiency in homes, businesses, and public institutions.
The project delivered impactful results, such as:

Illuminating 6.8 miles of border access roads in the Northern Triangle with energy-efficient streetlights to improve security.
Bringing renewable energy solutions to 200 off-grid families in rural communities.
Introducing solar thermal energy systems in public hospitals in El Salvador to improve healthcare services.
Installing energy-efficient exterior lighting at public schools in Guatemala and El Salvador, enabling nighttime recreational activities.
Equipping agro-industries with energy-efficient technologies to boost their competitiveness.
Strengthening higher education institutions with photovoltaic systems for academic use.
These interventions contributed to over $7 billion in clean energy investments, a 57% increase in renewable energy capacity, and a 480% growth in electricity transactions within the MER from 2010 to 2016.

By diversifying the energy matrix, the Initiative reduced reliance on fossil fuels, mitigating price volatility and creating a foundation for sustainable growth.
